JOHNSON ANNOUNCES CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION STUDENT WINNERS
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) announced Eva Madsen from Aberdeen as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for South Dakota. Madsen’s drawing “Freckle Face” is a self-portrait highlighting her unique facial features surrounded by blooming roses. Madsen is finishing her senior year at Roncalli High School. Her art teacher is Amy Heinz. The artwork will be on exhibit for the next year in the Cannon Tunnel at the U.S. Capitol, along with the winning artwork from other congressional districts.

GOVERNOR NOEM ANNOUNCES 2024 STUDENT ART EXHIBITION
PIERRE, S.D. – Governor Kristi Noem announced 12 students who are being recognized for their artistic talents through the Governor’s Student Art Competition. An exhibition of the artwork is now open to the public in the South Dakota Capitol building.
The Governor’s Student Art Exhibition is open for viewing in the first-floor rotunda of the Capitol through September 2024. The Capitol is open to the public Monday-Friday from 8 am-5 pm, and on weekends and holidays 8 am-6 pm. For tours of the State Capitol, please call 605-773-3688.

ARTS & CULTURE BUSINESSES IMPACT SOUTH DAKOTA’S ECONOMY
PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota's nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $363 million in economic activity in 2022. This is according to Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), an economic and social impact study conducted by Americans for the Arts with support from the South Dakota Arts Council, Arts South Dakota, and local arts agencies in Aberdeen, Brookings, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Yankton.

14 ARTWORKS PURCHASED FOR STATE COLLECTION
PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) recently purchased 14 new pieces for the state’s public art collection through the Art for State Buildings program.
The artworks were selected by a five-member advisory committee to the SDAC, which reviewed 65 purchase proposals and based its decisions on set review criteria including: quality of the work; the artwork’s relevance to South Dakota environment, history, heritage, or culture; professional experience of the artist; permanence and safety, as required for public artworks.

Every three to five years the South Dakota Arts Council (SDAC) takes time to cast a new vision and establish new goals for the development of a comprehensive state arts plan. In 2016 and 2017 SDAC, in conjunction with statewide nonprofit arts service and advocacy organization Arts South Dakota, conducted strategic planning activities, all of which are detailed below.
