Newcomers Reception

Fairmont Hotel's Fountain Room, 6:00 to 7:00 pm

This casual event will provide a quick overview of conference events to help you get the most out of your conference experience. You'll also have the opportunity to meet GIA's board members and staff. The conference opening reception will follow immediately after in the historic Venetian Ballroom.

Monday, October 10

Opening Plenary

Hip-hop poet and performer Marc Bamuthi Joseph will open the conference with an excerpt from his 2011 work, red, black, and GREEN: a blues, adapted to address the conference themes and generate conversation among participants.

Luncheon Plenary

Professor of Geography and American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California, Manuel Pastor will provide insight into the demographic and economic changes facing arts and cultural funders, as well as insight into the emerging trends that will shape our future.

Monday Evening Dine-Arounds

Organized by Bay Area grantmakers, this year's Dine Arounds will include a variety of cuisines and experiences. These no-host, informal dinners offer a chance to socialize with colleagues. Some will include visits to artist studios or arts venues, while others will be neighborhood tours ending with a restaurant dinner. Signup will be onsite at conference registration until 5:45pm on Monday. Participation is first-come-first-served.

Find your group at 6:00pm in the lobby. Departure will begin as soon as groups can gather.

Tuesday, October 11

Luncheon Plenary

Composer Mason Bates, recently featured in the YouTube Symphony, works on the cutting edge of performance and technology, combining live classical music with improvised computer generated sound. This keynote will examine and demonstrate his work.

Party at the Oakland Museum of California

Established in 1969 as a museum of the people, the Oakland Museum of California tells the ever-evolving story of the state by connecting collections and programs across the disciplines of art, history, and natural science. Join GIA and your colleagues for an evening of museum highlights, refreshments, and revelry. Sponsored by Bank of America.

Buses will run from 6:15pm - 6:45pm in front of the hotel, and depart as they are filled. Return buses will begin loading at the loading at the museum at 9:00pm and will continue to depart until 9:30pm.

Wednesday, October 12

Luncheon Plenary

Musician and philanthropist Eugene Rodriguez and activist and singer Linda Ronstadt have been deeply involved with the revival of traditional Mexican folk music in the Bay Area. This keynote will examine and celebrate that work through a combination narrative and performance with Los Cenzontles.
