The 2003 conference theme “The Edge” was inspired by Seattle's location on the edge of a continent, by the changing economic climate, and by GIA's continuing dialogue about working across cultures and sectors. An edge implies a boundary or a margin, defines adjacencies, reveals ends and beginnings, and identifies commonalities. A draft of a novel or a study for a painting can be an “edge,” or tipping point, for the artistic enterprise. We aim to “have an edge,” be effective, have an advantage. We are often “on edge,” excited or keyed up, eager and sharp. “Edgy” art and ideas push the limits of a medium or cross thresholds to unexpected content and outcomes. Conference programs explored and embraced the many lines and edges arts grantmakers walk.
