A must for private foundation grantmakers who give to individual artists—or for any foundation considering an individual artists grant program—this presentation is a survey of several key models for grantmaking to individuals, with the related IRS guidelines. The presenters will frame the practice of making direct grants to artists, as well as various models of working with public charities to distribute grants to artists. Included is a discussion of working with public charities as fiscal sponsors in a manner that enables grantmakers to play a more dynamic role in the artist selection process.

Presenter Bios:

Cynthia Gehrig is President of the Jerome Foundation, a private foundation that makes grants in the arts in Minnesota and New York City. She joined the Foundation 33 years ago as a Program Associate, and has served as its Executive since 1978. Gehrig has served on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Council on Foundations, completing terms as both Vice-Chair and Chair, and as Chair of Grantmakers in the Arts. She facilitated the first Arts Funding Benchmark publication for The Foundation Center and Grantmakers in the Arts. She is the former Managing Trustee and Chair of the Camargo Foundation, an operating Foundation that supports scholarly and artistic work through subsidized fellowship residencies at a work-study center in Cassis, France. She served as Vice Chair on the Board of ITVS, the Independent Television Service, and is currently serving as Board Chair of Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota.

Ingrid Mittermaier is a principal in the San Francisco law firm of Adler & Colvin, a firm that specializes in the representation of nonprofit organizations and their donors, with an emphasis on tax and corporate matters. Mittermaier is a past member of the Executive Committee of the State Bar of California’s Taxation Section, and past Chair of the Tax-Exempt Organizations Committee of the Taxation Section. She lectures regularly at law conferences and seminars. She has been a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of San Francisco in the College of Professional Studies, teaching a course in the Master of Nonprofit Administration program, and a member of the Advisory Board of USF’s Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management. Mittermaier has contributed to various publications and, most recently, was co-author of Rules of the Road: A Guide to the Law of Charities in the United States, Second Edition, published by the Council of Foundations in 2008. Mittermaier received her B.A., with distinction, in 1991 from Stanford University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her J.D. from the School of Law (Boalt Hall) of the University of California at Berkeley in 1994. Mittermaier is fluent in German.
