In the Reader last issue I reported on the Cleveland Foundation's decade-long effort (in partnership with other area funders, cultural institutions, and the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture) to make the case for local public support for the arts here. At the GIA conference last November, anyone within shouting distance of those of us from Cleveland must have heard that we were suc-cessful. The grins on our faces lit up the host celebration that first night.

The 2001 Summer Music and Art Institute for Teachers was presented through a collaboration among Cleveland State University, Young Audiences of Cleveland, Cleveland Opera, the Cleveland Orchestra, and ICARE (the Initiative for Cultural Arts in Education, a program currently housed at the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture). The Institute was the first such collaboration by this diverse group of organizations and programs. The featured keynote speakers were Cleveland Municipal School District CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett and Elliot W.

Following are excerpts from an interview with John Kreidler (San Francisco Foundation) conducted by Kathleen Cerveny (Cleveland Foundation and CIA board). The paper that Kreidler discusses in the interview provides a background for his "Flight Simulator," a computer program designed to demonstrate the arts ecosystem. The "Simulator" will be available for hands-on experimentation at the upcoming GIA conference.
