Museums and Libraries Eligible for US2020 City Competition

Announced by President Clinton at this June’s Clinton Global Initiative America, the US2020 City Competition seeks to capitalize on the role of cities as centers for innovation, supporting outstanding efforts to build STEM mentoring capacity at the local level. 3-5 cities from across the country will share over $1 million in resources from US2020, based on their plans to significantly increase STEM mentoring for girls, low-income youth, and students of color. Proposals will be accepted from self-organized coalitions including representatives from city government, corporations, nonprofits, schools, and philanthropy.

The City Competition features a 3-phase application process:

September 2013: Cities complete a short form, identifying major partners and outlining plans to scale up local STEM mentoring
December 2013: Finalists attend a two day “Ideas Camp” where they collaborate with experts and peers to refine their strategies
Late January 2014: Finalists submit a detailed description of how project partners will collaborate to accelerate STEM mentoring in their communities

The final 3-5 winners will be selected in the spring of 2014 based on their plans’ feasibility, sustainability and potential for impact, with projects launching 6-8 months later.

The Round 1 application is a short concept paper outlining communities’ plans to scale STEM mentoring, along with the prospective roles of coalition members. It is due on Friday, October 18 at 3 PM EST and must be submitted by a “lead applicant” organization on behalf of the “guiding coalition” from your city convened to organize this initiative.
