Yes, endowments that ensure the future of the city’s major arts organizations have shrunk, along with the interest income they generate. Meanwhile, smaller arts groups-which don’t have the luxury of endowments-are feeling the economic stress more directly. Grass-roots music clubs such as the Empty Bottle in Wicker Park and the Jazz Showcase in the South Loop lately have been enduring thinner crowds and, therefore, reduced revenue.

But for a variety of reasons, the economic downturn has not dramatically affected what we see on our stages and in our galleries, at least not yet.
